More Water-Subjects…

These water scenes are dominating my (spare) painting time lately, I want to paint more and more. I adore the process of looking into the reference shots and making sense of the chaotic patterning. Having fun!

Sand and Shells…

very much enjoying having the watercolours out again. My life right now is pretty hectic and having these sorts of paintings on the go is a GREAT way to de-stress and focus on something other than ‘stuff’. Recommended.

Carn Brae- watercolours

Carn Brae_1_smlCarn Brae_2_sml1

I’ve been messing around with the watercolours for a week or so, will upload more soon, in the meantime, here are a couple of very small watercolour paintings from last year based on photos from my UK trip.

Small Rocks…

When my sons were very young, they used to collect stones for me, as a sort of love gesture, I saved many of them and kept them in tubs. I pulled out a few out earlier today and painted them, great subjects for finding the¬†hidden little nuances that you wouldn’t normally pay attention to (as with the shells (posted earlier)) each stone is unique…

Recommended.

Fairy Wrens…

Australia has some truly¬†beautiful birds, but these little Wrens have captured my heart, I enjoy watching them, drawing them and painting them, love their busy-ness, their character, they’re always on the go and highly entertaining. I painted these three watercolours over the past 2-3 days, they’ve inspired me…

Watercolouring…

I’ve been playing with my watercolours again. I miss them so much. Sadly, only have time to work on miniature paintings for now. Here’s one I made early this morning. Btw, more of my watercolour efforts can be found on Facebook, look up ‘watercolouring’…

the brush was made by the very talented David Jackson -The Brushman.

Stones And Wildflowers…

Finding beauty in everyday things. I believe it’s not until you really look, or ‘want’ to see something, that you can appreciate it’s¬†beauty. I’m finding the more I paint these watercolours, the more appreciation I’m finding in not only the subject, but¬†for the love of painting itself…

Watercolour Warmup From This Morning…

I’m very much enjoying this new little exercise I’m practicing as often as time allows. Seeing and studying everyday objects is a great way to warm up and it helps the eyes look for subtleties in subjects we may otherwise never notice. I really recommend this…

This little painting took approximately 12 minutes.

Watercolour Warmups…

As I’ve been working on my most recent children’s book in watercolour, it stands to reason that I should get into the right frame of mind with a loosening up session. I painted both of these this morning, both very enjoyable. I’ll do this more often…

The Fantasy Artroom.

It’s been a little while since I posted about my new book here. The Fantasy artroom has been winging it’s way around the globe for 3-4 months, and right now, I’m in the process of putting a youtube channel together, I’ve updated the website, I now have the Facebook page up and running. Can I ask, if you like what you see, or if you’ve bought a copy of the book, that you spread the word. I’m hoping the project grows into more publications, more How To’ videos and more workshops. Elfmother…

I’ve just been commissioned to paint a ‘real’ version of this old digital painting. I’ll probably be using watercolour and gouache and I’m very much looking forward to it. I thought I’d add the steps I take to get to the final image here.

Eastern Water Dragon…

Eastern-watern-dragon_framed_sml

Every now and again I’ll have a root through my hard drives, looking for something and come across an old drawing or painting I’ve filed away. I found this one and thought I’d post it here. It harks back to the days when I spent a lot of time painting and drawing wildlife. this one’s an eastern Water Dragon from here in Australia… (watercolour/gouache)

Watercolouring…

I’m working digitally on most of my commissioned work at the moment which always leaves me desperate to paint traditionally, I satisfied that urge in front of the telly last night with my watercolours, painting this small scene- 5 1/2 x 4″. (It’ll appear larger here than the original.)
