Library Sketchings…

My apologies for the sporadic posts, I’ve been working my way through a project I have on the go and it’s taking up a LOT of my time, in a good way, of course. You can see what I’ve been up to HERE

In the meantime, here are a few sketches I made at the library a week or so ago, horses are a huge challenge for me, what better way is there to improve your drawing than drawing those things you find hard… bloody hard…

And for those who aren’t aware, my new book, ‘The Fantasy Artroom’ published by that superb art book publisher Dover Publications, is available from all good book stores, amazon.com and The Book Depository, get your copy now….

Library Sketching…

I draw. ALL THE TIME. It’s the only way to become any good at anything, to do it. And to keep on doing it…

Sketching and drawing and painting all help each other, idle sketches like this (from good reference books) help the hand-eye relationship and steady the lines, I made these sketches directly in sepia pen on crappy notepad paper and would recommend this no-pressure doodling to anyone who wants to better their craft.

New Year, New Start

Happy 2015 everyone. Hope it’s gotten off to a fine start for you all. I’m still trying to find my feet in many ways although overall, it’s been a positive beginning. So no real complaints.

I haven’t posted regularly for a long time, in part due to

a) The kids have been off on school holidays.

b) I’ve been sucked into a facebook void as far as spending time on the internet is concerned. If you’d like to keep track of what I’m up to, there’s the best place to do it, although I thoroughly intend to get back to blogging on here, I miss it.

c) My workload. It quietened down for a few months prior to Christmas and then took off again. I’ll be pretty busy for the next 2-3 months and that’s what an illustrator wants. No complaints. Truly.

So here I am, with 2-3 sketches drawn over the past couple of days. I haven’t sketched for the sheer sake of sketching for quite a while and will be doing that too. 2014 was a tough year  for me, personally, and it upset my mojo somewhat. Things are steadily improving so, with that in mind, hope you enjoy the sketches, plenty more to follow soon…

AVAILABLE FOR COMMISSIONS…

Christmas time is (almost) upon us, although the shops’ll have you believe it was already here.

I’m available for one off commissions, so if there’s anything you’d like drawn or painted, let me know. Reasonable rates of course, most things considered (except portraits). PM with your details. I’ll only be available until I’m swamped…

Stones And Wildflowers…

Finding beauty in everyday things. I believe it’s not until you really look, or ‘want’ to see something, that you can appreciate it’s beauty. I’m finding the more I paint these watercolours, the more appreciation I’m finding in not only the subject, but for the love of painting itself…

Watercolour Warmup From This Morning…

I’m very much enjoying this new little exercise I’m practicing as often as time allows. Seeing and studying everyday objects is a great way to warm up and it helps the eyes look for subtleties in subjects we may otherwise never notice. I really recommend this…

This little painting took approximately 12 minutes.

The Fantasy Artroom- Sample Pages….

I’m currently in the process of laying out ‘The Fantasy Artroom’, my successfully #funded #Kickstarter project:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/832625400/the-fantasy-artroom

We still have ten days #funding to go and I thought it’d be appropriate to add a couple of interior pages so people can view them, find out what all the book is all about.

**Note** Backers of a hard copy of the book now receive an #exclusive print, (see previous post)…And if we hit the stretch goals, there’ll be another one, please feel free to pass the news on to anyone who you feel would be interested!

Unicorn.

Here’s (another) Unicorn drawing. I need as much help drawing horsies as I can get.
I’m currently busy with commissions and compiling ideas and things for my Kickstarter project, will post more about that soon.

Mythical Doodles…

I’ve just been going through my files and have come across these in amongst a whole heap of things I forgot about. The first one was a watercolour painting I wasn’t particularly happy with, but I’ve greyscaled him and can look at it now, the second is a Centaur from a project I’ve had to abandon due to work commitments, hopefully I’ll be able to pick it up again at some point.

warming Up…

bird sketches_sml

I draw a lot of animals to warm up before a long haul at the drawing board, here’s a page I completed this morning, I drew them straight onto the paper using an old biro, bird books are brilliant for reference…

Dancing Ladies….

I rekindled an old love last night. I used to draw ballerinas all the time in my 20’s, something about the grace of the ladies and the challenge of the lines. I polished off 8 of these pages in an hour. I’ll definately be doing more, great practise!
