My (Continuing) Struggles With Pastels…

I worked in an art and framing store not long after I arrived in Australia 16 1/2 years ago. I did a lot of learning in that period having bought up all manner of mediums (due to being able to purchase at cost price, a luxury, truly) Anyway… prior to that I worked predominantly in black and white, pen and ink, pencils… I took a shine to acrylics straight away but they didn’t say what I wanted to say at the time, and dried all dull, oils were lovely but I found they made me cough, gave me skin irritations and made my hands all puffy. Water-based oils back then were a novelty more than a decent way to paint. Then came watercolour… My favourite. I avoided them like a plague. Far too hit and miss for a control-freak like me, but I caved in and they’re now my favourite medium of them all.

Then there’s pastel…

Hmmm… I think I like the idea of pastels more than the reality. That said, I’m bashing away with them. Dealing with the dust issues and the mess, the coughing… My lungs must look pretty right now. Anyway, I’m still trying. Here’s my 5th ever pastel attempt. There are a few little passages in this sketch that I like, at least I’ve learned by now, that it’s all about trial and error and working on weaknesses and playing on strengths. More? Mayebe…

Baby Fairy Wren…

I LOVE painting Wrens, I love watching them and I love taking photos of them. Logan has a wide variety of many of Australia’s species. here’s one I’m finishing up at the moment…

Some progress…

Been working periodically on this one, it’s lovely seeing it come together without a single hitch (touching wood as I say this). Looking forward to doing some more very soon.

Dolphins…

I’ve been working on a painting, just a little bit here and there around my commissioned work- this one’s been calling me for a while. Will post more progress as I go. (oil on canvas approx. 23 x 35″)

In Progress…

I’m enjoying working with watercolour at the moment, but finding scanning/taking working pics increasingly frustrating. With this one, I scanned the original  art  in and am finishing it off digitally. I’m not a fan of the digital ‘look’, all that slick, shiny stuff doesn’t do it for me personally. It’s always my goal to have my art, whether trad. or digital, have something of an organic look about it.

here I’m adding the line work in Sketchbook Pro. Great program, very intuitive…

68 Hours To Go!

So, the #Kickstarter project ‘The Fantasy Artroom’ has funded and we’ve currently passed the first stretch goal, so those people who’ve made a pledge including a hard copy of the book will now also receive another #exclusive print…

Watercolouring…

I’m working digitally on most of my commissioned work at the moment which always leaves me desperate to paint traditionally, I satisfied that urge in front of the telly last night with my watercolours, painting this small scene- 5 1/2 x 4″. (It’ll appear larger here than the original.)

Scratched Away At This Some More….

Moving into the fine details now… having to focus and not only look at the image as a whole, see how it all fits together, but also having to home in on those areas that require attention, and there are still many, many more. I’ll be putting this to one side for a day or two and look at it with fresh eyes.

Rest Stop…

here’s my newest painting (so far). I’ve decided to pull my finger out and paint some canvases, I miss the freeing aspects of painting this way, I sit down for far too long every day, whether it be in front of the computer-working digitally, or scratching away at a pen and ink drawing… Waving ones arms around with a brush loaded with paint is a very fun diversion. I spent 6-7 hours on this one yesterday, I’m hoping to do the same today. Will post progress shots as I go…
