My (Continuing) Struggles With Pastels…

I worked in an art and framing store not long after I arrived in Australia 16 1/2 years ago. I did a lot of learning in that period having bought up all manner of mediums (due to being able to purchase at cost price, a luxury, truly) Anyway… prior to that I worked predominantly in black and white, pen and ink, pencils… I took a shine to acrylics straight away but they didn’t say what I wanted to say at the time, and dried all dull, oils were lovely but I found they made me cough, gave me skin irritations and made my hands all puffy. Water-based oils back then were a novelty more than a decent way to paint. Then came watercolour… My favourite. I avoided them like a plague. Far too hit and miss for a control-freak like me, but I caved in and they’re now my favourite medium of them all.

Then there’s pastel…

Hmmm… I think I like the idea of pastels more than the reality. That said, I’m bashing away with them. Dealing with the dust issues and the mess, the coughing… My lungs must look pretty right now. Anyway, I’m still trying. Here’s my 5th ever pastel attempt. There are a few little passages in this sketch that I like, at least I’ve learned by now, that it’s all about trial and error and working on weaknesses and playing on strengths. More? Mayebe…

The Stream- Update…

I haven’t posted the progress of this one here for a while. Here’s how it’s looking right now. I tried to have it finished for Christmas (it’s a gift for somebody) but I didn’t make that deadline. Still, it’s coming together nicely, shouldn’t be too much longer…

Watercolour Warmup…

I thought I’d try something a little different today, haven’t had the watercolours out for a while and didn’t have much time as I’m busy with commissioned stuff, but came up with this. Might do a few more of these down the track. Happy to sell the painting. Message me if you’re interested…

Waterfall- Some Progress…

Really enjoying this one. After working all day on illustrations for clients, it’s a treat to pick up the paints and bash away at something for myself. I’ve recently been inspired to paint landscapes again (I paint nature whenever possible), and using oils has given me a new lease of (artistic) life. Here’s how it looks on my easel right now…

And I wanted to try something out, using watercolours, looking for a style that also involves some linework. (apologies for the scan)

Stones And Wildflowers…

Finding beauty in everyday things. I believe it’s not until you really look, or ‘want’ to see something, that you can appreciate it’s beauty. I’m finding the more I paint these watercolours, the more appreciation I’m finding in not only the subject, but for the love of painting itself…

Watercolour Warmups…

As I’ve been working on my most recent children’s book in watercolour, it stands to reason that I should get into the right frame of mind with a loosening up session. I painted both of these this morning, both very enjoyable. I’ll do this more often…

The Fantasy Artroom.

It’s been a little while since I posted about my new book here. The Fantasy artroom has been winging it’s way around the globe for 3-4 months, and right now, I’m in the process of putting a youtube channel together, I’ve updated the website, I now have the Facebook page up and running. Can I ask, if you like what you see, or if you’ve bought a copy of the book, that you spread the word. I’m hoping the project grows into more publications, more How To’ videos and more workshops. Lizard…

I found this old painting on one of my hard drives recently. I painted this one 12 years or so ago using watercolour and gouache. This is the best quality copy I have of it, I’m afraid…

Eastern Water Dragon…

Eastern-watern-dragon_framed_sml

Every now and again I’ll have a root through my hard drives, looking for something and come across an old drawing or painting I’ve filed away. I found this one and thought I’d post it here. It harks back to the days when I spent a lot of time painting and drawing wildlife. this one’s an eastern Water Dragon from here in Australia… (watercolour/gouache)

Watercolouring…

I’m working digitally on most of my commissioned work at the moment which always leaves me desperate to paint traditionally, I satisfied that urge in front of the telly last night with my watercolours, painting this small scene- 5 1/2 x 4″. (It’ll appear larger here than the original.)

Work In Progress…

I have a lot of stuff happening right now. If you’ve seen any of my recent posts you’ll know I have an exhibition coming up. I’ve been absolutely inspired lately and am playing things by ear. I haven’t made a shortlist of art to exhibit yet so I’m frantically painting away to see which ones resonate the most with me. I started this one earlier this morning and have spent approx. 4 hours on it so far, the fact that I’ve done this much in such a short space of time leads me to conclude that I’ll probably be exhibiting this. (oils).

I seem to be posting more and more progress shots of the things I’m up to, don’t I?… Here’s another one, the lovely Medusa in all her frightening glory. More updates as I go…

Digital Preliminary…

Here’s the digital rough for a new painting, it’s great to work an image out in this way, irons out the kinks etc. Of course, things’ll change between this and the painting (to be tackled in acrylics)… the model is the very lovely Janna-

I’ve spent 3-4 hours on this one since the last post and a client has just gotten back to me with a change that needs to be made to an illustration sooo (real work’s calling)… here’s where this one stands right now… The model is the wonderful Ida – mizzd-stock.deviantart.com

Rest Stop…

here’s my newest painting (so far). I’ve decided to pull my finger out and paint some canvases, I miss the freeing aspects of painting this way, I sit down for far too long every day, whether it be in front of the computer-working digitally, or scratching away at a pen and ink drawing… Waving ones arms around with a brush loaded with paint is a very fun diversion. I spent 6-7 hours on this one yesterday, I’m hoping to do the same today. Will post progress shots as I go…
