Crow’s Nest…

Just finished this one for the book I’m working on (which I’ll post more about when I’m allowed). I’ve never had so much fun with a project, the impossible angle here posed a little bit of a challenge and I’m not sure it’s ‘entirely’ realistic but what the heck, it’s for a children’s book, and it does the trick (imho 🙂

And this one (below), is a screenshot of a small vignette I’m working on of a bunch of pirates with faces obviously made for radio. fun fun fun…

More Pirate Stuff…

I’ve been working on my latest illustrative effort (see earlier posts). It’s a book about pirates (written by the wonderful robin Adolphs) and it’s been a LOT of fun to illustrate so far. Below is a portion of the cover art, it’s come a long way since the early sketches…

Here’s a progression…

Pirates!

I began working on my new book a week or so ago and am having a jolly old time creating the artwork. The book is called ‘Pirates Don’t Read’- written by Robin Adolphs and illustrated by erm… me.

I knew I was going to have fun with this one, what more could an illustrator ask for? A big old Pirate ship full of cool characters. The storyline is great and better still, carries a message well worth remembering. I hope you guys will follow it’s progress, will post more as I go.

Here are a few character sketches I made early on in the game, before I began the page illustrations…

From Pencils To Inks…

I’m often asked how I do what I do… Artists’, we get that a lot, right? I happily let people know that there are no magic wands involved and that the process usually employs only a little elbow grease, a jot of focus and the ability to apply oneself.

As a teacher, it’s ultra important for me, that my students understand this…

Here’s a drawing from a couple of years ago and the three-step-process I took to achieve the final (inked) version:

Many thanks to the very lovely

Into The Woods…

Really enjoying this stage I’m at with this project, my favourite part is the realisation, the ‘fleshing out’ of ideas, making the characters work, the environment, the mood… Exciting stuff!

Page Three…

Really enjoying this stuff right now and very happy with how they’re coming together. Here’s the latest one (that great big white area in the middle has been left for text btw)…

Vampire…

I created this character for a couple of kids in the library who began by looking over my shoulder as I was drawing, by the end of it, they were throwing ideas at me. Kids are far more imaginative than I, of course…

Pals.

Another drawing for the children’s illustration portfolio I’m compiling to find some work. Having a great time with these 🙂

The Meeting Place…

whale and dolphins7_smlWhere the land meets the sea. One from yesterday. I often think of the mess we’re making in our oceans and how the ocean dwellers have to deal said mess. We’re doing the same to our land too and it’s our children who have to deal with it. Here. we have innocents of both land and sea, completely trusting one another, lovingly…

Aussies…

Have been working on this one today, thoroughly enjoying the process of working on these samples as it’s been a while since I worked on any children’s illustrations. Would LOVE to get a book illustration gig working on a book of Aussie characters like these guys…

Rabbit Hops Across The Rocks…

rabbit_stream3_smlThis is sort of how I’m feeling right now. I have an exhibition I’ve been preparing for this past year and in the meantime have struggled to stay afloat, have been stuck in limbo and have been running on a ‘hope’ of sorts. The exhibition is on the 11th February, a special day for me as it’s my brother’s birthday, (he’s sadly no longer with us). I’m not sure what to think about the show, I’ve put the work in but there’s no guarantee it’s going to pay off in any way, as I said, living in hope. At least I’ll have plenty of work to sell at the end of it.

These Critter drawings are a lot of fun, (see recent posts for more) – if anyone knows of a publisher hiring illustrators who like drawing fluffy creatures and trees, let me know, I have a feeling I’ll be illustrating again this year…

Trying Out A New Technique…

ottersbythewater_newtechnique1_smlPencils are pencils, inks are inks, digital is…erm… digital. Trying a 100% digital approach to achieve a ‘traditional’. ‘Why?’ you may ask… Speed. plain and simple. I’m fond of drawing these Critters but they have to fit around other stuff I have on the go.  I also think this approach would also work for book illustrations, when speed is of the essence, time is money, etcetc…

Critters…

It’s been a very productive week or so and these critter drawings have (almost) been drawing themselves. I found my ‘line art’ voice again after working  in acrylic and oil for most of last year- hope this bodes well for what the New Year will bring creatively. Will soon be looking to find a way to let these out into the world as prints…
