Plodding Along…

It’s a great to see all the hard work beginning to pay off. Plenty of work to do yet but good to see it all taking shape. Pirate books are fun!

Crow’s Nest…

Just finished this one for the book I’m working on (which I’ll post more about when I’m allowed). I’ve never had so much fun with a project, the impossible angle here posed a little bit of a challenge and I’m not sure it’s ‘entirely’ realistic but what the heck, it’s for a children’s book, and it does the trick (imho 🙂

And this one (below), is a screenshot of a small vignette I’m working on of a bunch of pirates with faces obviously made for radio. fun fun fun…

More Pirate Stuff…

I’ve been working on my latest illustrative effort (see earlier posts). It’s a book about pirates (written by the wonderful robin Adolphs) and it’s been a LOT of fun to illustrate so far. Below is a portion of the cover art, it’s come a long way since the early sketches…

Refining Roughs…

28-29_stepsAnother one for the Pirate book I’m currently working on… Taking the initial thumbnail to a more finished level here. Not done yet of course, I just wanted to throw some colours over the top of the middle sketch to have a good idea of where I’ll be going when it comes to the final art. All of these steps make the transition to the finished illustrations a lot easier and it’s well worth taking the extra time to see these steps through…

Pirates!

I began working on my new book a week or so ago and am having a jolly old time creating the artwork. The book is called ‘Pirates Don’t Read’- written by Robin Adolphs and illustrated by erm… me.

I knew I was going to have fun with this one, what more could an illustrator ask for? A big old Pirate ship full of cool characters. The storyline is great and better still, carries a message well worth remembering. I hope you guys will follow it’s progress, will post more as I go.

Here are a few character sketches I made early on in the game, before I began the page illustrations…

From Pencils To Inks…

I’m often asked how I do what I do… Artists’, we get that a lot, right? I happily let people know that there are no magic wands involved and that the process usually employs only a little elbow grease, a jot of focus and the ability to apply oneself.

As a teacher, it’s ultra important for me, that my students understand this…

Here’s a drawing from a couple of years ago and the three-step-process I took to achieve the final (inked) version:

Of Mice and…

I haven’t drawn my little mouse ‘Finn MacNiall’, for a while, going to open up the box and see what happens- I need something to sink my teeth into and this little guy is currently squeeking up. More to follow…

Vampire…

VAMP1_sml

I created this character for a couple of kids in the library who began by looking over my shoulder as I was drawing, by the end of it, they were throwing ideas at me. Kids are far more imaginative than I, of course…

Pals.

Another drawing for the children’s illustration portfolio I’m compiling to find some work. Having a great time with these 🙂

Paper Planes…

Mind Map23_sml1Finished this one off today after a few days away, lovely to come back home and work on something bright and breezy. Wouldn’t it be great to fold up a large piece of paper, grab a pet and fly around like a kid? (my idea of a good time 😀

Hide And Seek. Steps…

Thought I’d simplify things this morning. I began this idea yesterday and felt obliged to see it through to completion. Here’s how it came into being…

  1. The rough idea. Just scribbling the elements of the image down, letting it happen…

badgers hide and seek2_smlTightening things up a little, also thinking in terms of tone…

Taking the overall thing a few steps further. The image is tightening up a lot more, giving me more to work with and the direction of the overall image…

Here’s how things look before I begin adding the colour in photoshop. I knew I didn’t want any cross-hatching or any elaborate linework so, keeping things as simple as possible…
