Really enjoying this stuff right now and very happy with how they’re coming together. Here’s the latest one (that great big white area in the middle has been left for text btw)…

Of Mice and…

I haven’t drawn my little mouse ‘Finn MacNiall’, for a while, going to open up the box and see what happens- I need something to sink my teeth into and this little guy is currently squeeking up. More to follow…

More Water-Subjects…

These water scenes are dominating my (spare) painting time lately, I want to paint more and more. I adore the process of looking into the reference shots and making sense of the chaotic patterning. Having fun!

My (Continuing) Struggles With Pastels…

I worked in an art and framing store not long after I arrived in Australia 16 1/2 years ago. I did a lot of learning in that period having bought up all manner of mediums (due to being able to purchase at cost price, a luxury, truly) Anyway… prior to that I worked predominantly in black and white, pen and ink, pencils… I took a shine to acrylics straight away but they didn’t say what I wanted to say at the time, and dried all dull, oils were lovely but I found they made me cough, gave me skin irritations and made my hands all puffy. Water-based oils back then were a novelty more than a decent way to paint. Then came watercolour… My favourite. I avoided them like a plague. Far too hit and miss for a control-freak like me, but I caved in and they’re now my favourite medium of them all.

Then there’s pastel…

Hmmm… I think I like the idea of pastels more than the reality. That said, I’m bashing away with them. Dealing with the dust issues and the mess, the coughing… My lungs must look pretty right now. Anyway, I’m still trying. Here’s my 5th ever pastel attempt. There are a few little passages in this sketch that I like, at least I’ve learned by now, that it’s all about trial and error and working on weaknesses and playing on strengths. More? Mayebe…

Paper Planes…

Mind Map23_sml1Finished this one off today after a few days away, lovely to come back home and work on something bright and breezy. Wouldn’t it be great to fold up a large piece of paper, grab a pet and fly around like a kid? (my idea of a good time 😀

Hide And Seek. Steps…

Thought I’d simplify things this morning. I began this idea yesterday and felt obliged to see it through to completion. Here’s how it came into being…

  1. The rough idea. Just scribbling the elements of the image down, letting it happen…

badgers hide and seek2_smlTightening things up a little, also thinking in terms of tone…

badgers hide and seek5_sml

Taking the overall thing a few steps further. The image is tightening up a lot more, giving me more to work with and the direction of the overall image…

Here’s how things look before I begin adding the colour in photoshop. I knew I didn’t want any cross-hatching or any elaborate linework so, keeping things as simple as possible…

And here’s how things ended up…

The Meeting Place…

whale and dolphins7_smlWhere the land meets the sea. One from yesterday. I often think of the mess we’re making in our oceans and how the ocean dwellers have to deal said mess. We’re doing the same to our land too and it’s our children who have to deal with it. Here. we have innocents of both land and sea, completely trusting one another, lovingly…

A Tortoise And A Hare…

Life’s sort of unfolding at a strange pace right now, I feel full of creative energy, overflowing almost yet the Universe seems to be wanting to hold me in some kind of meditative state, to reflect and grow, must have channelled this particular image because I didn’t  consciously create it…

Aussies…

Have been working on this one today, thoroughly enjoying the process of working on these samples as it’s been a while since I worked on any children’s illustrations. Would LOVE to get a book illustration gig working on a book of Aussie characters like these guys…

Exhibition Time…

Soooo…. my exhibition is off to a flying start. So many lovely people all in one place on the opening day, made some sales, some new friends, talked art and life, stayed cool in the air conditioning… It’s been a wonderful couple of days. Will be open all week (Mon-Fri) 10 -5pm if you’re in the neighbourhood come and say Hi…

Salvaging A Failed Painting…

As an artist is always learning at whatever stage of the game, it stands to reason there’ll be a few screwed up pieces of paper and unfinished canvases along the way. This one was almost 5 feet tall when I worked on it, I tried to get it right but it simply wasn’t having a bar of it. I’ve been through this a couple of thousand times or more over the years so naturally, thought nothing of it. Luckily I thought to take a photo of it before I painted over it, and equally lucky that I know my way around a Wacom tablet and painting software. I salvaged it with very little work and I’m happy as a result.

A win.

Trying Out A New Technique…

ottersbythewater_newtechnique1_smlPencils are pencils, inks are inks, digital is…erm… digital. Trying a 100% digital approach to achieve a ‘traditional’. ‘Why?’ you may ask… Speed. plain and simple. I’m fond of drawing these Critters but they have to fit around other stuff I have on the go.  I also think this approach would also work for book illustrations, when speed is of the essence, time is money, etcetc…

Critters…

It’s been a very productive week or so and these critter drawings have (almost) been drawing themselves. I found my ‘line art’ voice again after working  in acrylic and oil for most of last year- hope this bodes well for what the New Year will bring creatively. Will soon be looking to find a way to let these out into the world as prints…

Nuts

I knew there was a critter missing from this merry band. Was going through my reference photos this morning and saw my Squirrel folder. Will draw this character some more…

Nature Wins…

img_2783

I’ve been thinking a lot about the way we humans have been treating each other, and this planet lately. I’ve been seeing this image in my mind for quite some time, thought I’d honour the way I feel about it all with this sketch, might paint it if Iget the opportunity…
